Nearly 1.5 billion Muslims around the world begin the annual holy month of Ramadan this week – a time of fasting and prayer that commemorates the prophet Mohammed.
Under the Muslim calendar, it begins today or tomorrow.
Observing Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, when faithful Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during daylight hours for a month of piety, worship and alms-giving.
It’s also a peak time for pilgrims to visit Mecca or Medina in Saudi Arabia.
The holiest night, on August the 27th, commemorates the revelation of the Koran to the Prophet Mohammed in 610 AD.
The start of Ramadan is linked to the crescent moon but can vary around the world.
The holy month ends with Islam’s biggest festival, Eid, a time of gifts and feasting
