Avatar movie

Only five movies have ever broken the $1 billion box-office benchmark. Yet the sci-fi 3D epic “Avatar” smashed through in only three weeks.
Just 20 days after its release, James Cameron’s new film raked in $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the No. 2 top-grossing film of all time. There’s a big gap between second and first place, currently held by Cameron’s previous opus “Titanic” at $1.8 billion. But “Avatar” still has several months to sprint ahead.

Why some people like DRP and hate MDP

A COMMENT ON MINIVAN NEWS
My first assignment at university, back in 1997, asked me to look into why people voted the way they do.

I remember feeling quite ill-prepared to answer this question because I had never experienced voting in its true democratic form. After all I grew up in the Maldives.

However, I came to realise that it boils down to a combination of personal characteristics, particular circumstances and the choice of leaders, as well as the image of these leaders put across to the public.

In 2008, faced with a choice between the DRP and the MDP, it is not difficult to see who someone such as I would pick.

The Making of the President Anni

“You know, they said this day would never come. They said our sights were set too high. They said that this country was too divided; too disillusioned to ever come together around a common purpose.”

Civil servants’ salaries to be restored

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has decided to restore salaries and allowances of civil servants to its levels before the pay cuts enforced in October.

A circular issued by the commission yesterday states that the cuts were made on the request of the president and the finance ministry, which informed CSC it did not have enough funds in the budget for employees’ remuneration.

“Since the finance minister had estimated in the state budget for 2010 submitted to the People’s Majlis that government revenue would exceed Rf7 billion (US$544 million) and because the commission does not believe reduction of civil servants’ salaries for three months could be prolonged as a measure due to the economic circumstances facing the country…the commission has decided that civil servants will receive the full salaries determined for their posts from 1 January 2010,” it announced.

President misses his radio program

anni26julyPresident Mohamed Nasheed into his first 6 months at office started weekly radio address absent last Friday bringing a pause to his continuing campaign to meet the public. The president trying to reach his voice to the nation every Friday earlier changed the timing and then missed an address on June 19.

The first time his address missed was during his visit to fame in Sweden, where recently an opinion poll barred building new minarets at the mosques, to receive Anna Lindh Award.

07Maldives police have said they are seeking the deportation of a foreigner who allegedly sought to spread Christianity on the island of Kinbidhoo in Thaa Atoll.

Missionary activities are illegal under Maldivian law, as is the possession of non-Islamic religious materials beyond those ascribed for ‘personal use’.

Police sergeant Ahmed Shiyam said while no charges had yet been laid, it was normal practice “to send a person suspected of this to their country of origin while the case is under investigation.”

Shiyam declined to reveal specific details of the allegations “as the case is still under investigation”, but noted that “the whole community is very concerned about this.”

Kinbidhoo islanders identified the man as David Balk, and said he had been living on the island for the past several years with his wife and three children, aged 10-13 years old.
